What Is Hypnosis?Hypnosis is a state characterized by extreme relaxation and heightened imagination. It is most often compared to daydreaming, or the feeling of "losing yourself" in a book or movie. You are fully conscious, but you tune out most of the stimuli around you. You focus intently on the subject at hand, to the near exclusion of any other thought. In a daydream or movie, an imaginary world seems somewhat real to you, in the sense that it fully engages your emotions. Imaginary states can cause real fear, sadness or happiness. All such heightened states are a form of self-hypnosis. Hypnotists help you achieve this heightened state with relaxation and focusing exercises. In a heightened state, you feel relaxed and uninhibited. You experience this same feeling while watching a movie. As you become engrossed in the plot, worries about your job or family fade away, until all you are thinking about is what is up on the screen. This deep self-hypnosis is often compared to the relaxed mental state between wakefulness and sleep. Positive Change With HypnosisDuring hypnosis you are more open to suggestion. That is, when the hypnotist suggests a positive change, you will probably embrace the idea completely. A hypnotist cannot get you to do anything you do not want to do. You maintain your sense of morality throughout the entire experience. In this safe, uninhibited state, you will accomplish positive changes that will improve your life.
